My Favorite Things
After I tested positive for the celiac gene, I began to learn everything I could about healthier substitutes for the foods and flavors I loved so much. Eating gluten-free treats can actually taste good! On this page you will find some of my favorite products I have found and tested in my own kitchen with my own recipes. I have tried my best to compile them all here so you don’t have to hunt them down. Enjoy!
Vivanaturals Organic Coconut Flour
Viva Naturals is my favorite coconut flour brand: it is a reasonable price for the amount, and should last for months since you only use small amounts of coconut flour at a time. Coconut flour adds fiber and protein, is low carb, nut free and grain free. The texture is spot on: super soft and not too grainy.
Thai Kitchen Organic Coconut Milk
Full fat coconut milk is a great alternative to whole milk for recipes you want extra creamy or anything with buttermilk. You can also chill the cans and scrape off the top to get coconut cream for frosting, icing, or glaze. Coconut milk is also a good alternative for recipes you want to make nut-free. Thai kitchen has some of the best consistency and quality as it is organic and preservative free.
Terrasoul Raw Organic Cacao Powder
Another awesome baking staple for all your chocolate treats is raw cacao powder. Cacao is a superfood, rich in iron, calcium and magnesium, and has 40 times the antioxidants of blueberries! Terrasoul Cacao Powder is the best bang for your buck and is nom-gmo and organic.
Spectrum Essentials Organic Flax Seed
Flax seeds are a great option if you are looking for an egg replacement. They are my top egg replacement source, as they have a neutral flavor and do not significantly alter texture in baked goods.
Nutiva Refined Coconut Oil
Refined coconut oil has all the benefits of unrefined coconut oil (contains luaric acid), but without the coconut-y taste. This is my favorite brand. Reasonably priced, steam prepared, and non-GMO.
Nutiva Organic Palm Oil Shortening
Palm Oil Shortening is a necessary staple to have in your kitchen. It functions very similarly to butter in both flavor and texture. This brand is sustainably sourced, and reasonably priced. Health benefits include: lowering cholesterol, reducing oxidative stress, improving brain health, improving skin and hair, and boosting vitamin A levels.
Enjoy Life Semi-Sweet Mini Chocolate Chips
This is my favorite chocolate chip brand. They do contain added refined sugar, so it’s not technically paleo, but there is a relatively low amount per serving. It is an allergen-free brand, meaning it is soy, nut, egg and dairy free. They are great for chocolate chip cookies and any recipe that calls for melted chocolate coatings.
D’vash Date Syrup
D’vash Nectars are a great way to sweeten your treats without spiking your blood sugar and boost the flavor, too. Date nectar is low glycemic and a natural source of minerals and antioxidants. I use it as a replacement for honey or maple syrup when I want to give them a health boost, as well as for all the dairy-free caramel based sauces I make.
Butternut Mountain Farm Pure Organic Maple Syrup
This is my go-to organic, Non-GMO pure amber maple syrup, sourced in Vermont. The price is reasonable but without any sacrifice in quality. Maple syrup is a lower glycemic liquid sweetener that is rich in minerals like magnesium, potassium selenium and iron. I use it to sweeten and flavor most of my baked goodies.
Bob’s Red Mill Tapioca Flour
Tapioca starch adds the best texture to grain-free baking, especially in the case of breads. It allows you to achieve that chewy texture. Tapioca starch is also loaded with prebiotics, which are crucial for digestion.
Better Body Foods Organic Coconut Palm Sugar
I use primarily unrefined and low glycemic sweeteners, and coconut sugar is definitely one of my favorite options: It has electrolytes, it is low glycemic, has raw antioxidants, and is loaded with trace minerals. It adds a nice grainy texture and caramel flavor to all your goodies!
Artisana Market Raw Cashew Butter
Cashew butter is a huge staple in my pantry. I love using this raw cashew butter because it has such a neutral flavor, so it can be a great base in cookie dough, blondies, and even muffins! Cashews are a resistant starch that benefits the gut and contain omega three healthy fats, too.
